First Ever Georgia School Bridge Championships a SuccessAn American Contract Bridge League sanctioned event, the Georgia School Bridge Championships were held this past weekend in Atlanta, GA. Organized by Atlanta Junior Bridge and hosted by the Georgia Tech Bridge Club, thirty-eight juniors ranging in ages from six to seventeen participated in the event held in the Student Center on Georgia Tech’s campus. With nearly ten tables in play, the first ever event was a success.
Partners Jacob and Peter Wexel, representing Parkview High School, won the high school division. The middle school division was won by partners Andrew and Richard Jeng, representing River Trail Middle School. Timmy Green and Caleb Colburn, representing Lake Winward Elementary won the elementary division.
“It was a surprise that Jacob and I won because neither of us was thinking we would,” said fourteen year old Peter Wexel. “We really enjoyed playing and I’m looking forward to next year.”’
Not to be left out, Georgia Tech students and the Atlanta Junior Bridge teachers paired off to play while the juniors competed.
“One advantage bridge has as a competition between schools is that no one sits on the sidelines,” said Atlanta Junior Bridge co-founder, Patty Tucker. “This isn’t like basketball where only five players can be on the court at a time. Everyone can play every hand.”
